U.S. fencer takes knee during Pan Am Games medal ceremony, could face penalties

According to The Associated Press, Race Imboden, 26, took a knee as he and his teammates, Gerek Meinhardt and Nick Itkin, received their gold medals for winning the team foil competition.

"We must call for change," Imboden tweeted Friday.

"This week, I am honored to represent Team USA at the Pan Am Games, taking home Gold and Bronze. My pride, however, has been cut short by the multiple shortcomings of the country I hold so dear to my heart. Racism, Gun Control, mistreatment of immigrants, and a president who spreads hate are at the top of a long list."

Imboden continued: "I chose to [sacrifice] my moment today at the top of the podium to call attention to issues that I believe need to be addressed. I encourage others to please use your platforms for empowerment and change."

The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee said Imboden and other athletes agreed "to refrain from demonstrations that are political in nature," a committee spokesman told the AP.

"Our leadership are reviewing what consequences may result," the spokesman said.

Imboden's move sparked mixed reactions on social media.

"The hate is from what side again ... thanks for projecting yours!" one Twitter user wrote.

"This takes so much integrity. Wish I could thank you in person," another tweeted.
