A South Florida man kicked out a bedroom window covered by a hurricane shutter and carried his baby out of a burning house early Wednesday, a fire official said.

The blaze, which occurred just west of Port St. Lucie, originated near the home's kitchen, according to Brenda Stokes, a spokeswoman with the St. Lucie County Fire District.

The man and his child were taken to an area hospital, TCPalm reported. The man suffered minor burns and the baby was treated for smoke inhalation, Stokes told the website.

"There was a father and a baby that narrowly escaped," Stokes told TCPalm. "He had to kick that (hurricane shutter) out before they could get out."

The Red Cross assisted in removing four adults and two children living in the home, the website reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
