Insider recently conducted a poll asking voters, "In your view, what's the ideal age for a major party nominee for president?" Both the median and average response was 49.

The average age of the 20 Democratic candidates is 53. If voted into the highest office, the two oldest candidates, Sanders and Biden, would be 79 and 78, respectively, when sworn in.

On the other end of the spectrum, the youngest candidates -- Buttigieg, Gabbard and Swalwell -- would be 39, 39 and 40, respectively, on Inauguration Day.

For perspective: A candidate must be at least 35 to run for president. The youngest person to assume the office was Theodore Roosevelt, who was 42 when he was sworn in. The oldest was current President Donald Trump, who was 70 on the day of his inauguration.
