Before the storm hit the South Carolina coast, volunteers went to the beach to remove barriers from the nests.
The co-founder of Sea Turtle Protection on Pawleys Island, Jeff McClary, said it's very likely the remaining 67 nests were destroyed on the organization's beach area but that 80% of the nests were already harvested before Hurricane Dorian hit.
McClary said the previous record of sea turtle nests was 226 and that last year there were only 64, compared to 2019's 357 nests.
