Harold Treadwell, of Phoenix, was shot around 12:32 a.m., Sgt. Maggie Cox of the Phoenix Police Department told the Arizona Republic.
There were no passengers in the car at the time of the shooting, according to Lyft and Phoenix Police officials.
Cox said Treadwell had been shot in the upper torso, KTAR reported.
“Investigators are pretty confident (the shot) came from outside the vehicle,” Cox told the radio station.
Moments before he was killed, Treadwell spoke to his wife to wish her a happy anniversary.
"He liked to work nights. He called me at 12:28 a.m. and he said, 'Happy anniversary,' and we said we loved each other," Frances Treadwell told KPHO. " And he said he was on 32nd (Street)and Baseline (Road) and (that) he was going to start making his way up here."
On a GoFundMe page, Frances Treadwell wrote, "I feel like I am living a horrible, horrible nightmare and that any moment I will wake up."
Frances Treadwell said she does not understand why someone would kill "Tready."
"There's just not much to go on. Who did this and why? It's just so senseless that this happened to a stranger," she told KTVK. "I mean, he would never aggravate anybody. He wasn't a road-rage driver or anything. He was like Santa Claus," Frances said. "He was my best friend forever. My soul mate, for sure. He was just the best person ever."
In a statement, Lyft officials said they were "deeply saddened and shocked."
"Our sympathies go out to the loved ones of Harold Treadwell and all those impacted by this tragedy. We are actively assisting law enforcement and will continue helping in any way we can," the statement said.
The GoFundMe page has already received more than $15,900 in donations.
Police are still looking for a suspect, the Republic reported.
