A man who stopped to help a stranded vehicle on an icy Idaho interstate had his car stolen with his two young children inside -- by the couple he tried to assist, authorities said.

According to the Idaho State Police, both children under the age of 12 were located safely within an hour, and the two people who took off in the car were arrested, the Idaho State Journal reported.

Pocatello police arrested Raymond Aguirre, 24, and Bobbe Joe Torres, 29, and charged them with grand theft, the newspaper reported. Police said additional charges could be filed against the Pocatello couple.

The incident occurred about 8:40 p.m. on Interstate 15. The man, driving a 2007 Pontiac sedan, stopped to assist a 2015 Dodge Dart stranded in a snow-covered median of the highway, the State Journal reported. The man pulled over to help Aguirre and Torres, but when he got out of his car the couple jumped into the Pontiac and drove away, the newspaper reported.

The man had already contacted state police about the Dodge Dart, so when he called 911 to report his car had been taken, troopers were en route.

Pocatello police tracked the couple to a residence in the city and arrested them at 9:10 p.m., but the children were not there, the State Journal reported.

Ten minutes later, a relative of the children called police and said they had escaped from Aguirre and Torres and had walked to the relative’s house, the newspaper reported.

The children were soon reunited with their father.

The Bannock County Prosecutor's Office is expected to release more information about the incident Monday, the State Journal reported.
