Minnesota mother, toddler found dead; suspect captured, police say

A Minnesota woman and her 18-month-old son were found dead Saturday morning, and police arrested a 33-year-old man in connection with the deaths, authorities said.

Update 9:27 a.m. EDT March 9: Sheldon James Thompson, 33, of Cloquet, was taken into custody Sunday at 8:43 p.m. after an extensive search, the Duluth News Tribune reported.

Thompson was treated and cleared from a local hospital for “temperature-related issues,” the newspaper reported. He was booked into the Carlton County Jail pending two counts of second-degree homicide.

Original report: According to a Cloquet Police Department news release, a concerned citizen asked authorities to conduct a welfare check on the 27-year-old woman and her child around 1 p.m. Saturday, the Duluth News Tribune reported.

Police obtained a search warrant for the home, located on the Fond du Lac Indian Reservation, the television station reported. Police found the bodies of the woman and her son after entering the home, KMSP reported.

In the news release, police said they are seeking Sheldon James Thompson, 33, of Cloquet, for questioning, KBJR reported. Thompson was believed to be driving a dark-colored sedan -- possibly a Buick LeSabre or Park Avenue -- or a tan Honda accord with a Wisconsin registration, the television station reported.

The news release said Thompson was believed to be "armed and dangerous" and should not be approached by the public.

The names of the victims are being withheld pending identification and notification of next of kin, the News Tribune reported. According to the news release, the victims and suspect may have had a relationship or otherwise knew each other.
