Mississippi mom accused of trying to smother 9-week-old baby girl

A Mississippi woman is behind bars after police said she tried to smother her 9-week-old baby girl.

According to the Sun Herald, deputies arrested Simona Rene Somers, 23, of Saucier, on a charge of felony child abuse Saturday after her mother claimed that Somers put a thick blanket over the infant's face, authorities said.

Emergency crews arrived at the scene and examined the girl, but did not find any "obvious" wounds, WXXV-TV reported.

Somers is being held at the Harrison County Jail on $50,000 bond, the news outlets reported.
