A New Orleans woman and her unborn child were killed Friday in what witnesses described as a road rage incident, Louisiana authorities confirmed.

Jade Lewis, 22, and an unidentified driver of an SUV were reportedly jockeying for position when the incident escalated over merging, Lt. Michael Cunningham, a Kenner Police Department spokesman, told WWL-TV.

“Someone wanted to get in the other lane. They get too close. Someone blows their horn, and then it escalates from there,” Cunningham said, adding, “Then the other driver doesn’t want to let somebody over. Witnesses are saying that’s what happened here.”

Lewis, 22, was 38 weeks pregnant, NOLA.com reported.

According to Cunningham, both vehicles were speeding when the SUV clipped the front Lewis' vehicle. The collision caused Lewis to lose control of her vehicle, careen off the road and strike a power pole, WWL-TV reported.

Meanwhile, the unidentified driver fish tailed following the clip, crashed into a different pole and is being treated for injuries at a local hospital, the station reported.

Lewis was pronounced dead on the scene, and her unborn baby did not survive, NOLA.com reported.
