Nissan is recalling more than 300,000 vehicles because an explosion from a faulty airbag inflator could cause metal fragments to hit the driver or passengers, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration officials said.

These vehicles were part of an earlier airbag recall that only provided a temporary repair until a permanent fix was available.

"Nissan Group is implementing the next phase of the Takata inflator recalls in accordance with the predetermined coordinated remedy schedule set by NHTSA," Nissan told Consumer Reports.

Nissan will replace the airbags for free. The automaker will notify owners Feb. 10.

The following vehicles will be recalled:

  • 2001 to 2003 Nissan Maxima
  • 2002 to 2006 Nissan Sentra
  • 2002 to 2004 Nissan Pathfinder
  • 2007 to 2011 Nissan Versa Sedan and Versa Hatchback
  • 2001 to 2004 Infiniti I30 and I35
  • 2002 to 2003 Infiniti QX4
  • 2003 to 2008 Infiniti FX35 and FX45
  • 2006 to 2010 Infiniti M35 and M45
