Perceived ‘feral pig’ chases hikers up tree

A woman called 911 and reported that an animal was following and growling at her around 11:30 p.m. June 21, Texas Parks and Wildlife officials said in a release.

A Government Canyon State Park police officer searched her last known location but was unable to find her. He was able to contact her on the phone. She sent her location to his cellphone, and he hiked to it.

The officer found the woman and a man in a tree.

The woman warned the officer that she recently heard the noises and the animal was still close by.

As the officer was helping them, a car drove over some rumble strips on a nearby road. The officer asked if they thought they heard the animal noise again.

Both nodded.

"Embarrassed by the misperceived threat, the lost hikers were reassured by the officer that the unknown can be scary and their reaction surprisingly common," wildlife officials said in a release.
