"Bear knew something was wrong and sprang into action; she jumped on his chest, pawed at him, licked his face and finally succeeded in waking him up," the humane society wrote on its Facebook page.
The man woke up and felt dizzy, so he called 911, WEWS-TV reported.
Emergency medical technicians arrived and found the man's sugar level was higher than 900 milligrams per deciliter, the Lake Humane Society wrote on Facebook. According to WebMD, blood sugar levels are normally at 140 ml/dL two hours after a person eats.
Doctors told Alan that because his sugar levels were so high, it was possible he could have died had he remained asleep, WOIO reported.
According to Lake Humane Society's Facebook page, Alan is back home and grateful his cat was watching out for him.
