Police were called shortly after 6 p.m. Friday when someone spotted the boy in the car, according to a criminal complaint. At the time of the incident, the car's windows were rolled up, the temperature was 91 degrees and an excessive heat warning was in effect, WDJT-TV reported.
First responders broke the car's window to rescue the boy, who was "limp and very warm to the touch," the complaint said. The child was taken to a hospital and has since been released.
Sharon Hickmon, 55, was arrested on one count of child neglect.
The complaint said that when Hickmon arrived at the hospital, she began yelling at responders for breaking her car window. She reportedly said she thought it was 80 degrees outside.
Dr. Mike Meyer of Children's Hospital of Wisconsin told WTMJ-TV that the effects of a child being left in a hot car can be devastating quicker than they would be for an adult.
“Their body temperature rises faster. They’re more likely to have symptoms faster than what you and I have as an adult, and just because we’re feeling a certain way, magnify it for your little kids,” Meyer said.
Hickmon is due back in court Sept. 23, WISN-TV reported. She faces up to nine months in prison if she's convicted.
