On March 31, 2018, Massachusetts State Police were called to a rollover crash on I-495 north in Haverhill. The passenger, 18-year-old Alexis Spartz, was taken to Lawrence General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Witnesses say the driver, identified as Emily McGovern, was driving at a high rate of speed and weaving in and out of traffic. A witness told police she then saw brake lights and a large plume of dust and debris as she approached the accident scene.
Prosecutors say data they obtained show McGovern was traveling 107 mph 1.5 seconds before the crash and left the roadway at 77 mph before coming to a rest after rolling over.
Officials say Spartz and McGovern were drinking together before the crash. McGovern's blood alcohol level came in at 0.19.
On Friday, a judge ordered McGovern to remain drug and alcohol-free with random screenings and not to drive as the case goes on.
McGovern is due back in court on Aug 8.
