Representatives for the late Sen. John McCain released a farewell statement Monday, two days after the longtime lawmaker died at his home in Arizona.

McCain endured five years in a Vietnamese prisoner of war camp, served for more than 30 years in the U.S. Senate and ran for president of the United States twice before his death Saturday.

He died 13 months after he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer.

“I have often observed that I am the luckiest person on earth,” McCain wrote in the statement released Mondy. “I feel that way even now as I prepare for the end of my life. I have loved my life, all of it.”
