According to Consumer Reports, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released documents Thursday in which the South Korean auto manufacturer states moisture can infiltrate the antilock brake control computer, creating an electrical short and potentially spark a fire.
Because the problem can occur even when a vehicle’s engine is turned off, Kia is urging drivers of the affected vehicles to park them outdoors – away from structures and other vehicles – until they are serviced.
To date, the company has fielded reports of seven fires but no injuries.
Specifically, the recalls affect 140,466 Sedona minivans and 88,383 Sorento SUVs, and Kia will notify affected owners via first-class mail with instructions to begin bringing them to Kia dealerships for servicing beginning April 10.
Vehicle owners can contact Kia customer service at 800-333-4542, using the recall reference number SC186.
