Recall alert: Tuna recalled for elevated levels of histamine

FILE PHOTO: The Food and Drug Administration has announced a recall of tuna.

Mical Seafood, Inc., along with the Food and Drug Administration, has announced a voluntary recall of several tuna products.

The company says the tuna in question may have elevated histamine levels and can cause an allergic reaction called scombroid fish poisoning.

The symptoms, including a tingling or burning sensation in the mouth, swelling of the face, itchiness, nausea and other gastrointestinal issues, according to the FDA.

The items were sold in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Florida, Texas, Alabama, North Carolina, California, Michigan, Rhode Island, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Sint Maarten and Grand Cayman, and have production dates between April 2 and May 14, the FDA reported.

The following products are subject to the recall:

  • Tuna poke 2 cm AAA IVP, 10 pounds, lot number 23910, production date 4/9/2019
  • Tuna poke 2 cm AAA IVP, 10 pounds, lot number 24046, production date 4/20/2019
  • Tuna poke 2 cm AAA IVP, 10 pounds, lot number 25324, production date 4/27/2019
  • Tuna loins 5-8 pounds AAA IVP, 30 pounds, lot number 20799, production date 4/2/2019
  • Tuna loins 5-8 pounds AAA IVP, 30 pounds, lot number 24037, production date 4/9/2019
  • Tuna loins 5-8 pounds AAA IVP, 30 pounds, lot number 24279, production date 4/24/2019
  • Tuna loins 5-8 pounds AAA IVP, 30 pounds, lot number 23020, production date 5/10/2019
  • Tuna ground meat AAA IVP, 10 pounds, lot number 25694, production date 5/14/2019
  • Tuna Steaks 6oz AA IVP, 10 pounds, lot number 23906, production date 4/20/2019

Four people have become sick after eating the affected tuna, however, Mical Seafood called the illnesses isolated incidents.

The tuna should not be eaten. People are advised to quarantine it until it can be returned to the supplier for a full refund.
