According to a California Highway Patrol report, a vendor was loading a cart near the 16th hole fairway Friday morning when a box fell onto the vehicle's accelerator, the Salinas Californian reported.
Witnesses said the cart traveled in large circles until it was brought under control. The cart hit several spectators in line at a concession stand at the 16th hole, The Washington Post reported.
Four spectators were injured before the vendor, who was also hurt, managed to stop the cart, ESPN reported. The spectators ranged in age from 25 to 82, the Californian reported.
"We were standing in the concession line on the 16th hole when all of a sudden there was a runaway cart and one guy running after it, then a bunch of people running after it," Georgie Salant told Golf.com. "It was actually coming straight for the concession line and then it turned, just on its own, and it didn't stop. It started driving in circles. It ran over like five people."
