A sheriff picked up more than he expected Saturday when he ran into a fugitive while they were both getting pizzas from a restaurant in Letcher County, sheriff’s deputies said.

Sheriff Mickey Stines spotted the fugitive, who was wanted on a pair of outstanding warrants, while grabbing pizzas for concessions at an MJP/FNMS Archery tournament, deputies said. Stines apprehended the man with the help of Whitesburg police Officer Jordan Clemons, according to authorities.

The fugitive, who was not identified, was arrested on the outstanding warrants. Deputies said he also faces several new charges, including first-degree possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, menacing and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.

The arrest came one day before National Pizza Day, which was celebrated Sunday.
