Medical personnel were called to the restaurant around 11:30 a.m. and found three people who had been shot.
The Pineville Police Department said one of its officers was involved in the shooting but was not injured. Officials said the shooting stemmed from an armed robbery.
Pineville Police Department officials said the person who died was an employee at the Steak 'n Shake. The suspect was also wounded, officers said.
It was still unclear if the third person shot was an employee or customer.
No names have been released.
