The Clay County Sheriff's Office said Adam Cisneros and Lee Clark snuck into Red Boiling Springs School through a window in the school resource officer's office, then broke into a gun safe and left with an AR-15 and the vests, WTVF reported.
Authorities said Cisneros and Clark, both 18, were seen on surveillance video taking the gun and vests. The stolen items were buried in the backyard of Clark's home, WTVF reported.
Nothing else was taken, school officials said.
A Macon County Sheriff's Office policy allows school resource officers to bring personal weapons to campus, WTVF reported.
"They are there for the protection of our students, and if that's how the sheriff's department feels is necessary for that, then yes, I am supportive of their policy. But we do not make those policies," Tony Boles, Macon County director of schools, told WTVF.
