A Texas man lost both of his legs after diving off an overpass to avoid a semitruck last week on a Houston-area interstate, KTRK reported.

Abdullah Baidas is in intensive care after the incident, which occurred Friday around 1:30 a.m., the television station reported.

According to police, Baidas had stopped on Interstate 45 to help motorists when an Amazon delivery truck crashed into them, the culmination of several vehicles wrecking, KTRK reported.

Two of the people Baidas tried to help were killed, the television station reported. They were driving a Lincoln Navigator that was towing a trailer when the vehicle got a flat tire, KTRK reported. While pulled onto the side of the road, the SUV, containing two adults and two young children, was hit by a Mazda.

Then, a Chevrolet Silverado swerved to avoid the wreck, hit a wall and spun onto the middle lanes of I-45, KTRK reported.

Baidas pulled up to help, and that is when the Amazon delivery truck slammed into all the vehicles, killing Kedrick Conrad Cox, the driver of the Mazda, and the woman who had been in the Lincoln Navigator but has not been identified, the television station reported. the two children, ages 1 and 3, were not injured, police said.

Baidas saw the semi coming and jumped off an overpass, falling approximately 10 to 15 feet, according to KTRK. He was able to call 911 and also reported the crashes.

Baidas' uncle told KTRK that his nephew suffered multiple fractures of his skull and spine, and injured his legs so severely that doctors had to amputate them.

In a statement, Amazon called the crash a “terrible incident.”

”This is a terrible incident and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with all involved," the company said. "We will work with law enforcement and the carrier as they investigate.”

Charges were not expected to be filed against the truck driver, KTRK reported.
