A wayward cow brought traffic to a standstill Tuesday on a Virginia interstate highway, authorities said.

According to the Virginia State Police, the cow jumped out of a trailer on Interstate 64 near Chesapeake around 1 p.m., The Virginian-Pilot reported.

The cow lumbered about a mile down the highway, causing backups in the eastbound and westbound lanes, the newspaper reported.

The state police were aided by the Chesapeake Fire Marshal's Office and the Chesapeake Police Department, as officials from all three departments were able to herd the cow and catch it with a tow strap, The Virginian-Pilot reported.

State police contacted animal control officials, and then reunited the cow with its owner, the newspaper reported.
