Walgreens, CVS, Wegmans ask customers not to openly carry weapons in stores

NBC News reported Walgreens is he second-largest pharmacy chain. It has 9,560 stores nationally.

CVS also asked customers not to openly carry weapons at its locations, even in states where open carry is allowed.

"We support the efforts of individuals and groups working to prevent gun violence, and continually review our policies and procedures to ensure our stores remain a safe environment," CVS said in a tweeted statement. "We join a growing chorus of businesses in requesting that our customers, other than authorized law enforcement personnel, do not bring firearms into our stores."

Wegmans also issued a statement on its Twitter page.

"There’s nothing more important than the safety of our customers & employees. The sight of someone with a gun can be alarming, and we don’t want anyone to feel that way at Wegmans. For this reason, we prefer that customers not openly carry firearms into our stores."

None of the retailers have issued policy against open carry. The wording in each of the statements indicate that it is a preference from the businesses, but not a requirement.

Walmart was among the first major retailers to make such an announcement this week. On Wednesday, it was reported that its CEO, Doug McMillon, said the company would no longer sell ammunition used in high-capacity magazines and military-style weapons.

Unlike CVS, Wegmans and Walgreens, Walmart will have signage for Walmart and Sam’s Club customers informing them that they can no longer openly carry firearms at stores in "open carry" states unless authorized law enforcement officers are present.

The request of the retailers comes after multiple mass shootings within the last month, including two at different Walmart locations.
