The woman was sitting 25 rows down the right-field line at Globe Life Park when Rangers outfielder Willie Calhoun's line drive struck her during the first inning, The Dallas Morning News reported.
The woman was bleeding and used a towel to cover her head. She was able to walk to the stadium concourse with help from Globe Life Park personnel, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. She was taken to an area hospital for further evaluation, the newspaper reported.
Calhoun stepped out of the batter's box and watched as the woman was being tended to by ballpark personnel, the Star-Telegram reported.
Several MLB teams have extended protective netting down the foul lines, but the screens at Globe Life Park ends just past the dugouts, according to USA Today. The netting at other parks has been added to protect fans from line drives, as several people have been injured by baseballs over the past few years.
The Chicago White Sox were the first major league team to extend netting from the dugouts to the foul poles, the Chicago Tribune reported. The move came after Eloy Jimenez hit a sharp foul into the seats at Guaranteed Rate Field on June 10 and injured a woman, the newspaper reported. In May, Albert Almora Jr.'s foul ball struck and injured a small child in Houston. On June 23, a woman was injured at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles when she was struck by a foul ball hit by Cody Bellinger.
On Aug. 25, 2018, Linda Goldbloom, 79, was hit by a foul ball during the ninth inning of a game at Dodger Stadium. Goldbloom, who was celebrating her birthday and her 59th wedding anniversary, died four days later after emergency brain surgery, KTLA reported.
Calhoun's first career triple in the seventh inning cleared the bases and led the Rangers to a 9-4 victory,against Tigers, the Star-Telegram reported.
