The construction is expected to cost about $900,000, said Marty Kohler, planning director f0r the City of Middletown.
Once the location on North Verity Parkway opens in late September, the CVS in the Marsh Supermarket shopping center, 661 N. University Blvd., will close, said Mike Deangelis, spokesman for CVS. He said employees will transfer to the new location, and if needed, additional hires would be made.
Deangelis said the Verity location, unlike the one sandwiched between NAPA and Marsh’s, will offer a drive-through pharmacy. He said CVS is opening free-standing stores because customers prefer them to those in shopping centers.
“It’s all about customer convenience,” he said.
He said the Verity Parkway location is more visible than the University location, which is about 10,000-square-foot.
The CVS will be have entrances off Verity, Nelbar Street and Tytus Avenue, according to the development plans.
Deangelis said CVS will use about half of the five-acre property and sublease the rest. He said the company didn’t have any potential clients. Eventually, the Pierson showroom will be demolished, he said.
There are three CVS stores in the Middletown area: 820 Breiel Blvd., 440 Oxford State Road and University Boulevard. There are nine locations in Middletown, Hamilton, Fairfield and Oxford.
Rick Pearce, president of the The Chamber of Commerce Serving Middletown, Monroe and Trenton, said the expansion is positive for the community because it shows CVS wants to serve more of the area.
