10 Ohio towns that are commonly mispronounced

The name “Ohio” is from the Seneca Indian word ohi-yo which means “beautiful river” or “large creek.” This was the original name of both the Ohio River and Allegheny River.

1. Bellefontaine (behl FOWN tuhn)

The city of Bellefontaine is home of the first concrete street in America. The road was built in 1891 which coincides with Bellefontaine becoming a major railroad town.

2. Celina (suh LY nah)

Celina was established in 1834 by James Watson Riley, who named the town after the city of Selina in New York. The city’s population saw a dramatic increase in the decade following 1880 after the discovery of oil and natural gas deposits.

3. Coshocton (kuh SHAWK tuhn)

The 200-year-old city is known as “The Made in The USA City.” The city located in the hills of Eastern Central Ohio is the home to the largest American flag manufacturer.

4. Gallipolis (gal ih POLICE)

The city’s name is derived from the Latin “Galli” for Gaul or France and the Greek “polis” meaning city. The city is commonly known as “The City of the Gauls” from the first 500 settlers who were French.

5. Lima (LEYE muh)

Lima was established in 1831 and became the county seat of Allen County. The city was named after Lima, Peru.

6. Massillon (MASS ih luhn)

The city of Massillon was incorporated as a city when its population reached 5,000. The city is known as “The City of Champions” due to more than 30 sports professionals being raised there.

7. Maumee (maw MEE)

Located off of the Maumee River, this suburb of Toledo was established in 1817. Due to the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, many flocked to the region.

8. Portsmouth (PORTS muhth)

In 1803, Henry Massie formally laid out the plan of the town of Portsmouth. He named the town after Portsmouth, Virginia.

9. Russia (ROO she)

The small village north of Dayton was established in 1853. According to the 2010 census, there were 640 people residing in the village.

10. Versailles (ver SALES)

The town was founded in 1819 with the original name of Jacksonville. It was later changed to Versailles in 1837 due to the large amount of French members in the community.
