Dayton Public Schools began tearing down the structure on Tuesday. They said it will take somewhere between eight to 11 weeks to complete the demolition.
For some graduates, it was a moment of nostalgia to see the nearly century-old building being torn apart.
“It makes you feel sad inside (to see the school demolished)… the memories of the school, the friends you made, and the great sporting events,” said Howard Williams Jr., class of 1974.
But, not all of its rich history will be lost. The School is planning to use memorable pieces of the old school for use in the new structure.
Dayton Public Schools is collaborating with the city of Dayton for the new $23 to 25 million complex. The site will be the new home to a Dayton Public School Boys Academy, pre-K to eigth grade, and a Rec-Plex.
The new site is expected to be complete by the fall of 2010.
