1 / 21
The Miami Valley, like the rest of world, was stunned on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, when terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners and used them to attack the United States. A total of 2,996 people died that day when the airplanes crashed into the World Trade Center towers in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and a field near Shanksville, Pa. The Miami Valley region reacted by coming together. Participants in a lunchtime prayer vigil sponsored by the Dayton Chapter of the Promise Keepers are shown in silhouette against the brick pattern of Courthouse Square, Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001.
