This species is prized not only for its ornamental value but also because it is a long-lived tree that can thrive in the landlocked conditions of parking lots. Bald cypress trees are also useful for erosion control and flood prevention.
Instead of keeping the turf grass currently present in the parking lot, CE will be replacing it with wild geraniums. This native species is pollinator friendly and will be an excellent groundcover, which will require little maintenance once established and therefore save money.
Trevino added, “Planting a groundcover will eliminate the need for the base grounds crews to mow this area. Adding native/pollinator friendly habitat while reducing the workload for street grounds crews is a win-win situation. In addition to inviting people out to help us with plantings, we’d also like to invite people to come out and visit with folks from the environmental branch. There will be informational tables showcasing base environmental initiatives on site.
“We are excited to collaborate to celebrate this important day,” said Trevino. “Earth Day demonstrates support for environmental protection, and this is a cause we are dedicated to.”
In addition to this event, there are other ways individuals can celebrate Earth Day. This year, one of the goals of Earth Day is to end plastic pollution. Plastics are some of the most commonly littered items in the world. This pollution negatively impacts wildlife, habitats and even humans.
The staff advises everyone to learn to reduce plastic consumption by utilizing reusable containers. Above all, they urge all to reduce, reuse and recycle.
