1 dead after hostage situation in Butler County

A man released a woman then shot and wounded himself during a standoff Wednesday in Trenton that left another woman dead. Now, law enforcement agencies are investigating whether the hostage situation in Trenton is connected to a homicide overnight in Madison Twp., also in Butler County.

UPDATE @ 2:15 p.m.

Negotiators with the Butler County Sheriff’s Office were able to talk a man out of a Trenton home after he shot out its windows, according to Sheriff Richard K. Jones.

Once outside, the man released one hostage, a woman, Jones said.

It was then that the man attempted to die by suicide by pointing a handgun under his chin and firing, Jones said.

An “elderly woman” was found dead inside the Trenton home.

Jones did not elaborate on the extent of the man’s injuries, nor did he release the connection among the man and at least two female hostages in the home.

One woman was able to escape the home, according to Jones.

UPDATE @ 12:10 p.m.:

A Trenton ambulance with lights activated has left the area, and is being closely followed by a sheriff’s cruiser.

Authorities at the scene said the hostage situation is over.

UPDATE @ 11:20 a.m.:

Deputies fired gunshots this morning after a suspect in a homicide shot at them from a house in the area of Dell Drive and First Street in Trenton, Jones said.

Deputies went to the home in search of a suspect from an overnight homicide in Madison Twp., he said. When deputies knocked on the home’s door, “several rounds” were fired at them, Jones said.

There is at least one hostage inside the house, and deputies are negotiating with the suspect. The suspect has shot out the home’s windows.

No deputies were injured. Trenton police and state highway patrol also are on scene.

UPDATE @ 11:05 a.m.:

Crews on the scene report that sheriff’s deputies blocked Sal Boulevard. Several neighbors are standing outside their homes.

The sheriff’s office is planning to give an update soon, and we will bring you that information.

INITIAL REPORT:

The Butler County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies are responding to shots fired near Trenton that might be connected to a possible homicide overnight.

Butler County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Tony Dwyer said he and others are responding now to shots being fired on Sal Boulevard in Trenton. He said they are investigating a body found nearby overnight as a homicide.
