Tennessee state lawmakers could vote on the resolution today.
Polk is one of three presidents buried in Tennessee, along with Andrew Jackson and Andrew Johnson. Ohio and New York are among the three states with more presidential gravesites, each with five.
While Ulysses S. Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, he is buried in New York. Virginia has more of the tombs than any state with nine, including the only two presidents buried at Arlington National Cemetery: Ohio-born William Howard Taft and John F. Kennedy.
Here are cities where United States presidents are laid to rest in Ohio and bordering states:
Presidents buried in Ohio:
William Henry Harrison, April 4, 1841, North Bend
Rutherford B. Hayes, Jan. 17; 1893, Fremont
James A. Garfield, Sept. 19, 1881, Cleveland
William McKinley, Sept. 14, 1901, Canton
Warren G. Harding, Aug. 2, 1923, Marion
Presidents buried in states bordering Ohio:
Zachary Taylor, July 9, 1850, Louisville, Ky.
James Buchanan, June 1, 1868, Lancaster, Pa.
Benjamin Harrison, March 13, 1901, Indianapolis
Gerald R. Ford, Dec. 26, 2006, Grand Rapids, Mich.
Polk died in 1849, three months after leaving the White House. His body was first interred in what is now the Nashville City Cemetery because an ordinance then required those who died of infectious diseases be buried within 24 hours on the outskirts of town. Less than a year later, the body was moved to a tomb at his Nashville mansion as specified in his will, according to the Associated Press.
