5 retailers expanding into the Dayton region as others shut down

While major department stores like Sears, Toys “R” Us and Bon-Ton are filing for bankruptcy and closing stores nationwide, others are thriving with massive expansions — including new stores in the Miami Valley.

From off-price retailers to entertainment concepts, grocers and furniture shops, retailers are finding success in expanding into the Dayton market.

Here are five stores that have recently opened or plan to open their first Dayton-area location in the near future.

1. Marc’s

Marc's grocery store opened at 2100 E. Whipp Road in Kettering in August. The grocery store was founded in Cleveland in 1979 and now operates stores in Youngstown, Akron and Columbus as well.

The store is known for its closeout section, which features discounted and seasonal items.

2. Ross Dress for Less

The Dayton Mall confirmed Wednesday that Ross Dress for Less would open a store in the former hhgregg space beside JCPenney. The discount retailer has plans to rapidly expand throughout the rest of this year and 2019. It forecasts it will have more than 2,400 locations nationwide.

The closest Ross store currently is in Indianapolis. The Dayton Mall hasn’t disclosed an opening date yet. Another store is planned for Beavercreek, according to Greene County records.

3. A.C. Moore

A.C. Moore opens Saturday at 251 E. Alex Bell Road in Centerville. The New Jersey-based arts and crafts store will have opened six Ohio locations when the Centerville store debuts. It plans to continue westward expansion.

4. The RoomPlace 

Chicago-based The RoomPlace plans to open a store at the Dayton Mall and one at the Mall at Fairfield Commons in the coming year. The store is helping to fill half of the vacant Sears space at Faifield Commons.

The brand has opened more than 25 stores since it started in 1912, mainly in Chicago and Indianapolis. It’s expansion into Dayton is it’s first move out of Illinois and Indiana.

5. Round1 Entertainment

Japanese entertainment concept Round 1, similar to a Dave and Buster's, is opening in the other half of the soon-to-be vacant Sears space at the Mall at Fairfield Commons. It's expected to open late next year.

In 2010, the company expanded overseas with its first store in Industry, California. Since then, it has expanded in the United States to 39 locations across 21 states. The only other Ohio location is near Cleveland.
