Sidney man gets prison for standoff, courtroom brawl

Greg Russell changes plea as he is found competent

A Sidney man apologized to a Shelby County public defender, a county corrections officer and police officers involved in a recent standoff.

Gregory Russell offered the apologies to them as well as his family on Thursday as he was about to be sentenced to five years in prison on charges of intimidation involving an attorney, two counts of assault on police officers and two counts of  harassment with bodily fluids. Eight other charges were dismissed.

The charges are the result of a standoff with police on South Main Avenue on June 26 and a courtroom brawl in Sidney Municipal Court the following morning at his arraignment stemming from the standoff. The melee lasted about 40 seconds.

Russell attacked his attorney, Heath Hegemann. The Shelby County public defender was treated and released from a hospital.

Russell was immediately sentenced by Common Pleas Judge James Stevenson.

Prior to his change of plea, Russell was determined to be competent for trial on the 13 charges stemming from the standoff and distubance in the courtroom.
