Springboro school official responds to verdict in ex-gym teacher’s trial

Springboro Schools supports the jury’s verdict in the case against John Austin Hopkins, an ex-gym teacher, Interim Superintendent Carrie Hester said in a statement.

“Mr. Hopkins’ behavior is unacceptable, and will not be tolerated now, or ever, within Springboro Schools,” Hester said. “Springboro Schools is a family, and as a family, we are not impervious to difficult times.  Yet, we together are always here for one-another, hand-in-hand, to support those in need.”

Hopkins was removed from Clearcreek Elementary and placed on administrative leave as soon as Springboro Schools heard of the misconduct. The Board of Education unanimously accepted Hopkins’ resignation soon after.

“Now, one year later, justice has finally been served,” Hester said.

Hester said that safeguards within the school system will provide a safe environment for students.

“Our hearts are with those families affected, and we are forever grateful to those who worked diligently to bring Mr. Hopkins to justice,” she said.
