Huffman was the primary sponsor on a bill to legalize medical marijuana in Ohio. The governor signed it into law in June 2016.

The primary for legislative races next year is in May.

The 5th Senate district includes most of the city of Dayton and western Montgomery County, all of Miami and Preble counties and part of Darke County. The district is considered a swing seat that, in the past, has been the focus of heated contests between the GOP and Democratic nominees.
No Democrats have announced a run for the seat yet.

Huffman lives in Tipp City with his wife and their five children.
