Today will be sunny and cold for most of the day, with clouds starting to increase in the evening as we start into a period of prolonged below-normal temperatures, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington. Highs for the day will only reach around 27 degrees.

A weak weather disturbance may bring light snow to the northern Miami Valley. Champaign, Darke, Miami and Preble counties will see small snow accumulations, along with cold temperatures and wind that will result in a wind chill between five degrees below zero and 10 degrees below zero tomorrow morning.

Shortly after dark, skies will quickly become overcast, with a chance of snow starting around the same time. Chances will quickly rise, with snowfall becoming likely by 10 p.m., then falling away shortly before daybreak on Sunday. The NWS estimated that new snowfall of around an inch is possible.

Aside from the snow, nighttime temperatures will fall to dangerously cold levels around 11 degrees, with wind chills making temperatures feel as cold as 3 degrees below zero.

Prolonged exposure to these bitter cold conditions can lead to frostbite or hypothermia. Some signs of frostbite include a burning sensation, tingling or numbing. Hypothermia can begin with shivering, followed by drowsiness, shallow breathing, slurred speech and, eventually, unconsciousness and death.

Previously, the NWS said that it has been most of two years since Cincinnati saw single-digit weather, the second-longest streak on record. If Cincinnati sees single digits on Saturday night, the streak will end at 704 days, one week shy of the previous record, which ended at 711 days on Jan. 21, 2013.

In Dayton, the last time temperatures dipped into the single digits was Dec. 19, 2019, 414 days ago, according to the NWS.

After dawn Sunday, clouds will largely break up for mostly sunny skies. However, temperatures will stay low, with highs only reaching up to around 20 degrees, and some light winds making it feel as low as the single digits all day.

In the evening, clouds will increase again for a mostly cloudy night, but otherwise weather will remain dry as temperatures fall to around 10 degrees. Winds will get lighter overnight.

On Monday, it will be mostly cloudy as temperatures rise to a high of around 28 degrees. Clouds will rise even more in the evening for an overcast night.

After dark on Monday we will see a chance of snow, which the NWS predicted will continue through the night and into Tuesday. Overnight temperatures will be a little warmer than the previous two nights, with a low of around 20 degrees, and calmer winds pushing wind chill values down into the teens.
