A chilly, but mainly dry weekend

Today will largely be sunny and cold, with a high near 37 degrees, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

However, during the afternoon and into the overnight hours we will see clouds building up quickly, joined by gusty winds as high as 21 mph after night falls. Overnight temperatures won’t fall much, only dropping to around 31 degrees.

Beginning around dawn on Wednesday, we will see a chance of rain, quickly rising throughout the day. Showers will be likely by late morning, the NWS predicted, and continue long into the night.

Temperatures during the day will be much warmer, with a high around 52 degrees, then dropping back down to around 35 degrees overnight.

Early on New Year’s Eve, the rain chances will drop, but will linger throughout the day. We will also see a chance of snow mixed in starting shortly before dawn and stay with us for most of the day.

Snow chances will fall away mid-afternoon but will pick right back up again just before dark.

Temperatures won’t rise much from Wednesday’s low of around 35 degrees, with the NWS only predicting a high around 38 degrees.

Once dark falls on Thursday rain and snow chances will rise quickly, coming to a peak as the new year begins. Those chances will stay strong several hours into Friday morning before snow chances drop, though rain chances will continue through New Year’s Day.

Overnight lows will only dip slightly to around 33 degrees.
