Teacher’s Aide Accused Of Pandering Obscenity

A woman said her mother bought her a computer at a garage sale only to find child pornography on it. Police said the computer belonged to a teacher’s aide with the Vandalia-Butler School District.

According to police reports, David Pottenger, 46, of Troy, has been charged with pandering obscenities involving a minor.

The report indicated that Pottenger worked as a contracted employee at Smith School in the special education department.

Suzie Barnes was excited to get a computer. She said her mother bought it for her at a garage sale, and when she plugged it in, and turned it on, a picture popped up that she was not expecting.

Barnes said, “It looked like an 8-year-old girl. It took me a second. My heart started beating fast. I was absolutely shocked.”

Barnes called police and detectives from Troy tracked down the original owner of the computer who they identified as Pottenger.

Pottenger was arraigned in Miami County Municipal Court on Thursday morning and was ordered to stay away from people under the age of 18. He is also not allowed to use a computer while the case is pending.

Investigators said they found nearly a dozen photos of girls between the ages of 10 and 15 on his computer.

According to police reports, Pottenger admitted that the computer was his. He also told police where the pornographic images came from.

Capt. Joe Long with Troy Police said, “it appears they were not local. They were off the Internet.”

News Center 7 has called detectives to get more information about Pottenger’s arrest. However, Gabrielle Enright spoke with the superintendent of Vandalia Schools and she said Pottenger will not be returning to Smith Middle School and that she has requested his contract be terminated.

The superintendent also said any computer that Pottenger had access to is being looked over by the school and the police department.

Pottenger is out of jail on his own recognizance.
