Teen Who Drowned In Richmond Identified

The name of the 15-year-old boy who drowned in Richmond, Ind., has been released.

Austin Israel drowned around 10:15 a.m. Monday in the Whitewater River located near North 17th Street and J Street. Officers said Israel was found under the current in the river.

A dive team located the teen within a few minutes, performed CPR and then transported him to Reid Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Israel was among a group of about a dozen kids from the Wernle Youth and Family Treatment Center who were swimming in the river, our partners at KICKS 96 reported.

Witnesses said Israel jumped off a bridge and was dragged by an undertow.

According to police, there were some adults near the scene.

Police said there have been no-swimming signs posted in the area before, but they were not sure if the signs still existed.
