Teradata, named for managing terabytes of data, founded in 1970s before acquisition by NCR

Teradata, which will move its Dayton-area headquarters functions to San Diego, has a history dating to the 1970s.

Teradata was founded as a database management system for parallel processing with multiple microprocessors in the late 1970s. The name symbolized the ability to manage terabytes (trillions of bytes) of data.

It was acquired by NCR in 1991.

NCR announced on Jan. 8, 2007, that it would spin off the division as a publicly traded company, with the split expected to become effective by late that summer.

Teradata accounted for one-quarter of NCR’s $6 billion in revenue the year before the split.

Teradata’s first headquarters were along Miami Village Drive in Miami Twp., and it moved to Austin Landing in 2010.
