Syndee Miller said she and her 2-year-old daughter, Westleigh, were getting into the family truck in rural Somervell County southwest of Dallas when the snake bit the child on her leg, KXII reported.
"Being outside is basically second nature to us, and I just heard her scream," Miller told KHOU. "It was scary, very, very scary."
Miller called 911 and took Westleigh to an emergency room, the television station reported. She then was transferred to the intensive care unit at Cook Children’s Hospital in Fort Worth for more treatment.
"For the first day and a half, she didn't move out of our arms," Miller told KHOU.
Courtney Anderson, general biologist at the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge in Grayson County, said residents need to be cautious as the weather warms up and snakes become more active.
"Snakes are a part of the habitat and they're going to here. Just take precautions as far as wearing the proper clothing, not being aware, not walking barefoot at night," Anderson told KXII. "Be smart about these animals and their environment and they will not hurt you."
