Is The Clark County Jail Overcrowded?

Is the Clark County Jail overcrowded, making conditions unsafe for inmates and staff? That question is getting more attention recently in Springfield.

The sheriff said the facility is above capacity, but not overcrowded. However, a local judge is critical of the jail's policies and said conditions are not acceptable.

In the first five months of the year, Clark County has had more than 6,600 people booked into the county jail. The facility was built to hold 198 inmates, but now there are 240 inmates, putting a strain on staff and resources.

Sheriff Gene Kelly gave NewsCenter 7 a tour of the jail facility and some inmates complained of overcrowding and too many people in a small space.

One of the policies that is coming under fire, is a policy that Kelly has in place. The policy states that DUI suspects and those driving on a suspended license are to be held in jail because they miss their court date all too often. However, a local judge disagrees with the policy.

The judge said he believes the priority should be put on violent offenders and not DUI and suspension offenders.
