According to an account written for the Journal Herald in 1968 posted on Dayton History Books Online, Buffalo Bill Cody rode his horse "right up to the bar." Infamous gangster John Dillinger stopped in, as did boxer Jack Dempsey.
The saloon is the subject of this week's update to the popular Then & Now photo feature, which explores past and present views of notable Dayton locations.
Ritty hired carvers from Barney and Smith Car Company to create a 30-foot-long bar out of mahogany, according to the Journal Herald story.
Elaborately carved creatures including a bird dog and an owl decorate the bar, which is now the centerpiece of Jay’s Seafood Restaurant in Dayton’s Oregon Historic District.
