The United Brethren Publishing House was originally a store front at Main and Fourth streets in Dayton.

The lot was purchased in 1853, and the following year a four-story building was constructed, according to research done by Dayton’s Department of Planning.

This building is the subject of this week's update to the popular Then & Now photo feature, which explores past and present views of notable Dayton locations.

The United Brethren Publishing House began in Circleville in 1834. After moving to Dayton, the business flourished and was known for its bookstore and excellent production facilities for religious books and periodicals.

In 1904 remodeling and new construction began in the Chicago Commercial style.

By 1924, an eight-bay addition and tower were constructed bringing the building height to 21 floors and making it the tallest reinforced concrete building in the world.

Today the building is known as the Centre City Building.
