Police outside of Washington, D.C. are investigating a shooting in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, va.

Fox News is reporting that House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and members of his staff were shot during baseball practice. The Congressional Baseball Game was scheduled to take place Thursday at Nationals Park in Washington.

Here are some things to know about the event:

1. Began in 1909. The annual tradition began in 1909 when Pennsylvania Rep. John Tener, a former professional baseball player, organized a bipartisan game.

2. For charity. The baseball game has turned into a fundraising event and has contributed to charities including The Washington Literary cent, The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington and the Washington National Dream Foundation.

3. Winning streak broken. In 2016, the Republicans broke the Democrats' seven-year winning streak with a walk-off, 8-7 win.
