RELATED: State says bridge is safe despite missing chunk
ODOT officials encourage detour traffic to use the Woodman Drive exit one mile further east, then use Linden Avenue to get back to Smithville.
All current on-ramps from Smithville to U.S. 35 will remain open until June 1.
When the project is finished, the main change will be how traffic from northbound Smithville gets on westbound 35. Currently, those drivers turn right onto a “flyover” ramp that curves over the top of 35 before merging into westbound traffic. That bridge/ramp was damaged in 2016 when it was struck by a truck, but it was deemed safe and has remained open.
By mid- to late 2020, drivers on northbound Smithville will pass that ramp, go straight across the Smithville bridge, then turn left at a traffic light onto a ramp to westbound 35, ODOT officials said.
2019 UPDATE: Smithville Road project at U.S. 35 under way
After that on-ramp and signal are operational, the “flyover” bridge and ramp will be demolished.
Construction crews led by Great Lakes Construction Co. are currently removing the center island median on the Smithville Road bridge over U.S. 35, which is down to one lane in each direction.
The cost for the project is $4 million, according to ODOT.
I-675 work under way

Single-lane closures may be in effect at any time except 4 to 6 p.m. weekdays, when all lanes will be open.
