Trotwood firefighters said they tried to get inside the buidling to fight the fire at first, but found smoke and flames in the attic. Trotwood Fire Chief Gene Lutz said, "We decided to pull crews out because of a fear of the roof collapsing."
Lutz said that proved to be a wise move because the flames burned through the building's roof just a couple minutes later.
Flames then shot up to 40 feet into the air for about 90 minutes before firefighters brought them under control.
Parents who send their children to the school were shocked Thursday morning, as they looked at the debris that's left. Tasha Jones said, "This is crazy, they're supposed to be improving the building, not burning, it's not supposed to be burning." Jones has two children who are on the honor roll at the school.
School administrators are also very upset about fire. They said there's been construction going on there and they are adding onto the front building of the property on Shiloh Springs Road. It's a building that used to be home to the Montgomery County Area 1 and Area 2 courts in Trotwood.
Principal Jeff Neely said the academy will open on schedule September 2 in another building and module classrooms on the grounds.
Trotwood fire investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
