Trotwood police initially were dispatched at 10:12 p.m. to a shoplifting at Speedway gas station at 5010 Olive Road.
The shoplifting suspect left before police arrived and walked west on Shiloh Springs Road. Trotwood police Sgt. Joseph McCrary stated.
Officers found Hogan about a block away near the entrance of the Kensington Apartment complex, where McCrary said in the release that Hogan refused to follow orders and assaulted one of the officers.
“Additional attempts were made to gain compliance, without success,” McCrary said.
Hogan ran away and officers pursued him to an apartment at 712 Kelford Place. While officers waited for backup, McCrary said Hogan left the apartment with a knife in his hand. He was fatally shot by the officers.
Police did not say how many times the officers shot at Hogan.
The officers involved in the incident were not injured, but have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting, said Steve Irwin, a spokesman for the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.
