“We will continue to do everything we can to keep our students and staff safe, including social distancing, face mask requirements and proper cleaning procedures,” Piper said. “However, it is not possible to ensure social distancing at all times when all students are in school.”
Piper said the district is awaiting contact tracing results from Miami County Public Health and “people will be notified when they need to be quarantined” if they were exposed to someone who has tested positive.
As of Monday afternoon, no other students had been quarantined as a result of the three positive test results, which are tied to Troy Junior High School and the Van Cleve sixth-grade building.
Troy is one of many school districts that offered families a choice between in-person classes or a fully online approach. The two models are run separately, both by Troy’s own teachers.
Piper said any students who have to quarantine at home will have some opportunities to work directly with their teacher and class in a live format, mixed with some independent study time.
“This is one of the reasons we wanted to ensure one-to-one computers for all of our students this year, because we anticipated situations such as these happening,” he said.
Piper said the school district will continue to notify families any time a student or staff member “in a school, in a classroom, on a bus or on a team” tests positive for COVID-19.
“If Miami County Public Health determines that any student or staff member has been in close contact with someone who has tested positive, they will be notified directly,” he said.
Piper said there’s no specific threshold or number of cases that would lead Troy schools to move all classes online. He said the district will continue to work with Miami County Public Health to make those decisions.
Second Springboro case
A second Springboro High School student has tested positive for COVID-19, the school district said Monday. That’s on the heels of a student-athlete’s positive test last week that led to the cancellation of Springboro’s Friday football game vs. Miamisburg.
School officials said any students who were exposed to the teen who tested positive would receive a ‘Notification of Exposure’ letter from the district.
“The school system, in coordination with the Warren County Health District, is working to provide a low risk environment for the students and staff while continuing to offer excellent education opportunities," the schools' message says. “The CDC states that a single case of COVID-19 will not likely warrant closing the entire school.”
